Cultures and societies that prefer male children verbally and physically abuse and sometimes even murder mothers who give birth to female children. Quite a few wives are driven to suicide because they cannot bear the torture anymore. However, according to modern medical science research, a mother's chromosome cannot select the male gender of the child.

TWO TYPICAL CASES OF VIOLENCE AGAINST MOTHERS OF DAUGHTERS

In July 2022, Manoj Bansal was sentenced to life in India for burning his wife Anu alive for ‘not having a son.’ Seven of his relatives helped Manoj in committing this murder. Her daughters Tanya and Latika testified against their father. He allegedly grew abusive towards their mother after their birth and forced her to have five abortions. Anu died six days after she was doused with kerosene and set ablaze.

After suffering eight years of domestic abuse, Mandeep Kaur, who was 30, committed suicide in Richmond Hill, New York, on August 3, 2022. She was the victim of beatings and brutalities because her husband, Ranjodhbeer Singh Sandhu, wanted a dowry and a son. Mandeep’s last video recording before her death described her sufferings and showed her bruises and blood clots. She is survived by her two daughters, aged four and six.

Anu and Mandeep would have been alive today if their husbands knew that females’ chromosomes do not determine the baby’s male gender.

According to a National Crime Records Bureau of India (NCRB) report for 2021, the majority of cases (31.8%) regarding crime against women under IPC (Indian Penal Code) were registered under ‘Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives.’

THE STUDY OF CHROMOSOMES

A human body cell has 23 pairs of chromosomes (46). Men are the heterogametic sex. He produces two types of sperm, one with an 'X' and the other with a 'Y' chromosome. Women are the homogametic sex. All unfertilized female eggs carry an 'X' chromosome.

A baby comes into existence when a male sperm and a female egg unite. A girl is born when the egg meets with a sperm also carrying an ‘X’ chromosome. A boy comes to life when the egg meets with a sperm carrying a ‘Y’ chromosome.

Only a male sperm carrying an ‘X’ or ‘Y’ chromosome determines the gender of the baby. All female eggs have only an ‘X’ chromosome. As female eggs do not have the 'Y' chromosome, they cannot produce baby boys. Therefore, those who prefer baby boys should not blame mothers for giving birth to baby girls.

PLEASE EDUCATE PEOPLE THAT THE FATHER'S SPERM WITH A 'Y' CHROMOSOME DECIDES A BABY'S MALE GENDER, NOT THE MOTHER'S EGG WITH AN 'X' CHROMOSOME

All students of biology and medical science know this fact. It is hard to understand why this well-known fact is kept a secret, and many women suffer for giving birth to female children. Women’s organizations and social activists should educate people about this truth, especially in those societies where baby boys receive a warm welcome, but baby girls do not.

In modern and advanced civilized societies, boys and girls are considered equal. It is high time ignorant people give up backward ideas and violence is stopped against women, like Anu and Mandeep, for giving birth to girls. Let us do our utmost to love, cherish, protect, and raise baby girls with respect, dignity, and equality as strong and confident daughters. As women, they contribute to their family’s and society’s well-being by holding up half the sky.
